Basic Canvaswork - author Joan Phillips; updated by Carolyn Mitchell
This course is designed to give instruction to the beginning Canvaswork stitcher in the following: to learn the basic preparation for Canvaswork stitching, to learn the basic elements of the five main categories of Canvaswork, to learn a wide variety of stitches in the families of straight, diagonal, cross, tied, Florentine and tufted stitches, to begin graphing skills, to begin to develop skills in colour and design, to learn the use of suitable materials used in Canvaswork, to learn the techniques of blocking and finishing this type of embroidery. There is no pre-requisite.

Basic Counted Thread - author Connie Wilks, revised by Loletta Hale and Colleen Darling
This course introduces basic level information on five counted thread techniques: Cross stitch, Blackwork, Pulled Thread, Hardanger embroidery and Drawn THread work. The student will gain knowledge of the materials used in these techniques, learn the fundamental concepts and develop an appreciation of the traditional and contemporary uses through practice and research. Small projects with finishing methods in each technique are required. There is no prerequisite for this course.

Basic Crewel - Dorita Grant and Helen McCrindle
This course is designed to teach the beginning Crewel student the fundamentals of this type of embroidery. The student will begin to develop skills in stitching the basic stitches; to creatively use these basic stitches; to become familiar with the historical past of Crewel embroidery; to begin applying colour theory for Crewel embroidery; to begin learning the design process for Crewel. A systematic approach is used to learn through a well-designed notebook with several small projects. There is no prerequisite for taking this course.

Basic Metal Thread Embroidery - author Janice Routley
This course is designed to teach the beginning Metal Thread student the basic skills in the techniques and handling of the various kinds of metal and metallic threads, and the tools and materials to be used. The student is shown correct methods of transferring pattern to fabric, mounting fabric ready for stitching, mounting finished project and encouraged to use these techniques in a creative manner; to gain a perspective on the historical aspects of Metal THread embroidery. A final student-designed and stitched project is required in the last lesson. There is no prerequisite for taking this course.

Individual Intermediate Courses

Prerequisite:
EAC Basic Course or equivalent from other recognized organization or institution. Or, you may submit a minimum of three detailed slides or pictures of different pieces of your work in the technique for which you are applying, plus one unmounted piece showing a variety of stitches. The Education Director, in consultation with the Education Committee will consider your application based on your submission.

Colour for Embroidery - author Pam Godderis
No Prerequisite for this course - completion time 18 months.
The purpose of this course is to develop an awareness and understanding of basic colour theory and its application in embroidery. Exercises are provided to apply colour theory to embroidery; to encourage the formation of personal creativity through the application of colour theory; to learn a colour theory vocabulary and how to recognize the elements related to hue. While working with colour theory components, the student will demonstrate an understanding of these concepts. The student will create a personal philosophy of colour to apply their embroidery. There is no prerequisite for taking this course.

Design for Embroidery - author Pam Godderis
No Prerequisite for this course - completion time 18 months.
The purpose of this course is to expand the awareness of, and encourage the development of positive attitudes of the participants towards developing their own creative potential; to provide exercises which will enable participants to develop their sensory awareness and creativity through embroidery; to achieve an understanding of the principles of art, and how they are used as a vocabulary for expressing the visual aspects of embroidery, as well as for defining personal ideas and thoughts. The student will learn of the specific elements and principles of design and then generate experiments in fabric, thread and other art media to demonstrate these. Sensory awareness, through the 'look and see' method, as well as other senses, will be employed in order to gain inspiration for future embroideries. There is no prerequisite for taking this course.

Intermediate Canvaswork - author Anna-Marie Winter
This course is designed to give instruction in intermediate Canvaswork embroidery skills. The student will learn to use in a creative manner the stitches learned in the basic course, as well learning new stitches, to develop skills in colour and design, to use organizational skills in planning a project, to begin researching information, to introduce new techniques and encourage experimentation and creativity, to continue knowledge of finishing techniques. The course expends the knowledge of Canvaswork stitches with emphasis on the variegations. Other topics explored are colour, design, designing new stitches, adapting designs to canvas, lettering, and a short introduction to mixed media work. The pre-requisite for this course is the Basic Canvaswork course.

Intermediate Blackwork - author Colleen Darling
This course is designed to develop basic counted threads skills to the intermediate level specializing in Blackwork embroidery. The student will learn the two styles of Blackwork (Back stitch filling patterns and Double Running work), the choosing of materials suitable, begin designing personal work, colour concepts as applied to Blackwork, critical analysis of their work, historical background and the use of traditional and contemporary materials and methods. A student-designed and stitched project is the final project. The prerequisite for this course is the EAC Basic Counted Thread course.

Intermediate Crewel - Dorita Grant and Helen McCrindle
This course helps the student to expand upon basic skills to become an intermediate Crewel stitcher. The student will develop skills in techniques, stitches, stitch variations and designing of Crewel embroidery at the intermediate level; will form an appreciation for the historical traditions of Crewel. The student should be able to select appropriate fabric threads and needles; identify, stitch and diagram basic stitches and variations; search references for information; transfer designs to fabric; describe and apply colour and design principles to a self-initiated project; clean, block and mount Crewel embroidery. The prerequisite for this course is the EAC Basic Crewel embroidery course.

Intermediate Hardanger - author Connie Wilks; revised by Carolyn Mitchell and Colleen Darling
This course is designed to provide instruction in intermediate skill levels of Hardanger embroidery. The student will learn techniques for designing Hardanger, the use of colour, planning material requirements, graphing projects, creative use of traditional and contemporary materials and stitch patterns, stitching and finishing projects, as well as some historical research for this type of embroidery. A student-designed and stitched major project is the final assignment. The prerequisite for this course is the EAC Basic Counted Thread course.

Intermediate Whitework Embroidery - TBA
This course is designed to give instruction in intermediate skill levels of Whitework Embroidery. Techniques in Broderie Anglaise, Lettering, Richelieu, Hedebo, Mountmellick and Ayrshire Stitchery will be taught. The student will identify and use the correct fabric, threads, needles, and special tools for each technique studied. Students will learn to transfer designs to fabrics, complete samples of each type of stitchery within this field, and research the historical information for each technique. Finishing, conservation methods, and identifying examples of Whitework Embroidery will also be covered. A student designed and stitched project is the final assignment. The pre-requisite for this course is the EAC Basic Crewel Course.

Prerequisite:
EAC Intermediate Course or equivalent from other recognized organization or institution. Or, you may submit a minimum of three detailed slides or pictures of different pieces of your work in the technique for which you are applying, plus one unmounted piece showing a variety of stitches. The Notebook Review Panel will consider your application based on your submission.

Advanced Canvaswork - author Anna-Marie Winter
This course is designed for the student to expand upon the knowledge and skills learned in the basic and intermediate level courses. Topics covered are further knowledge in colour, design, creativity, organizing skills in planning and presentation, use of traditional and contemporary materials in Canvaswork, skill in researching information, expanding student's knowledge of embroidery history, introducing new techniques and encouraging experimentation, furthering skills in graphing, blocking and finishing, and learning conservation and restoration techniques. This course is a prerequisite for a student wishing to enroll in the EAC Teacher Certification Course specializing in Canvaswork teaching. The prerequisite for the advanced course is the Intermediate Canvaswork course.

Advanced Counted Thread – Samplers -Author Colleen Darling
The purpose of this course is to expand the student’s skills and knowledge in a variety of counted thread techniques as learned in the Basic Counted Thread correspondence course and either the Intermediate Hardanger or Intermediate Blackwork course. Subjects included for further study are: traditional and creative uses of many counted thread stitches; skills of detailed graphing; colour and design theories as used in samplers; influences of historical samplers on modern work; use of traditional, as well as contemporary, materials; organizing skills in research, planning and presentation; conservation, preservation, restoration and storage of samplers; researching Canadian samplers held in public or private collections and recording this information in the EAC Sampler Registry. The major project is an original student-designed and - stitched sampler using contemporary materials in various counted thread techniques with a student-chosen theme.  The prerequisite for enrolment is completion of either the Intermediate Hardanger or Intermediate Blackwork individual correspondence course. This course is a prerequisite for applying for enrolment in the EAC Teacher Certificate Programme specializing in counted thread teaching.

Advanced Crewel and Surface Embroidery - authors Dorita Grant and Helen McCrindle
This course will assist the student to build upon the skills and accomplishments developed in the basic and intermediate level courses. The various subject matters covered are: the more creative, as well as the traditional, uses of crewel stitches and their variations, the influence of historical traditions on contemporary Crewel embroidery, the effective use of materials in Crewel/Surface projects, the organizational skills needed for project planning and presentation. Students learn the selection of various materials suitable for self-initiated projects. Further study of the principles of colour and design, and other related forms of embroidery are incorporated into the study plan. Covered also are techniques of conservation, preservation, and storage of embroideries along with the various finishing techniques used in Crewel embroidery.
This course is a prerequisite for enrollment in the EAC Teacher Certificate Programme specializing in Crewel and Surface embroidery teaching. The prerequisite for this course is the Intermediate Crewel correspondence course.
