The sampler registry was undertaken by the EAC to locate and document samplers in Canada for the purpose of study and research.
The samplers that have been documented in museums and private collections across Canada illustrate the variety of the backgrounds of Canadians. Although some of the samplers have come from foreign countries, samplers done in Canada reflect the ethnic origin of the girl's family and community. These samplers show a vast diversity of skill in embroidery and design and range from the simplest schoolgirl alphabet samplers to more sophisticated work using a variety of scripts, imaginative motifs and pleasing colour combinations. Until recently samplers were given very little attention or valued. Research into samplers continues and the collecting and studying of samplers has increased the value and respect for the genre. The EAC library has copies of CDs that may be accessed. Contact: library@eac.ca to borrow a CD. If you wish to take part in this project by documenting samplers or are researching samplers.
